Platelet Dysfunction after Trauma: Mechanisms and Practice

Date

June 9, 2020 - 9:00am

Event Description

Presenter: Jurgis Alvikas (Advisor: Dr. Matthew Neal)

Platelets play a critical role in hemostasis following injury. However, patients who present to the Trauma Bay are frequently on antiplatelet medications. These medications, widely used for treatment and prevention of cardiovascular morbidity, increase the risk and progression of traumatic intracranial hemorrhage (tICH). Platelet transfusion has been used in an effort to improve platelet function and patient outcomes. However, evidence behind this practice is lacking. Dr. Alvikas will discuss a systematic review and meta-analysis of platelet transfusion for tICH patients on antiplatelet medications.
