A new grant and a new sub-award for research to be conducted by Jon D. Piganelli, PhD, will receive funding.
Dr. Piganelli is the principal investigator (PI) on the project, “Examining the Role of CVB in the Generation of Beta Cell Neoantigens and Targeted Approaches at Therapeutic Intervention,” which will be funded by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) of the National Institutes of Health. In this project, Dr. Piganelli will assess the role of Coxsackie virus B (CVB) infection in the progression of T1D and therapeutic strategies that impede enzymatic mechanisms to affect T1D progression.
The NIDDK will also fund a subaward for the project “Transcriptional and Translational Mechanisms Governing Beta Cell Function,” with PI Raghavendra G. Mirmira, MD, from the University of Chicago. In this project, the Piganelli lab will assess T cell specificity in vitro in various knockout and inhibitor-treated islets for the assessment of the integrated stress response in the progression of T cell recognition and beta cell destruction. The Piganelli lab will discuss their findings with the Mirmira lab for determination on how to proceed.
Congratulations to Dr. Piganelli!
