Congratulations to Principal Investigators Mohammad H. Eslami, MD, MPH, FACS, FACC, and David A. Vorp, PhD, whose R21 research proposal “Endovascular Orifice Detection (EOrD) Device for in situ Fenestration of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm,” was funded by the National Institutes of Health/National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI). In this project, Drs. Eslami and Vorp will develop a new device by creating holes in a stent used to reinforce the weakened aorta in patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) while within the patient to allow passage of blood to the aorta’s branching conduits. Their long term goal with their novel device is improve patient healthcare and reduce overall costs associated with AAA repair. Untreated AAAs may go on to rupture; AAA rupture is associated with a 90% mortality rate and accounts for the 15th leading cause of death in the United States, with more than 15,000 annual deaths reported annually.
