As part of UPMC’s partnership between University Medical Center (UMC) and Nazarbayev University (NU) in Kazakhstan, Dr. David Bartlett, a world-renowned surgical oncologist and pioneer in the development of Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemoperfusion, visited UMC in Astana to participate in the training master course “Innovations in Oncology Round Table” on March 15, 2018.
Dr. Bartlett presented a keynote lecture, providing participants with a history of robotic surgery, a detailed overview of the surgical delivery of chemotherapy, and insight to upcoming advances in surgical oncology. His visit also created the opportunity for Kazakhstan’s practitioners in the field to discuss the latest innovations in oncology. The UPMC/NU/UMC jointly-hosted event welcomed over 50 healthcare practitioners for presentations by leading UPMC cancer experts.
Special guests U.S. Ambassador to Kazakhstan George Krol and Nazarbayev University President Shigeo Katsu provided opening remarks, both highlighting progress on the ongoing collaboration to establish the National Research Oncology Center, a world-class cancer institute slated to open in Astana in 2021.
Dr. Bartlett’s visit resulted in some press coverage on Kazakhstan TV channel (one of the nation’s main TV channels), Inform Buro (one of Kazakhstan’s main online news outlets), and 365info.kz (online media outlet).
