We are very pleased to announce the promotion of Amer H. Zureikat, MD, FACS to Chief of the Division of Gastrointestinal (GI) Surgical Oncology, effective April 1, 2018.
Dr. Zureikat earned his medical degree from the Royal College of Surgeons with honors and completed internships at Beaumont Hospital RCSI in Dublin, Ireland and University of Chicago Medical Center. After completing his General Surgery Residency at University of Chicago of Medical Center in 2008, he first joined the UPMC Department of Surgery as a surgical oncology fellow.
Dr. Zureikat will step into the Division Chief role after an impressive 10-year history as a faculty member in our department. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Division of GI Surgical Oncology and has served as Co-Director of the UPMC Pancreatic Cancer Center since 2012. In 2015, he took on additional leadership responsibilities as Quality Director of the Division of GI Surgical Oncology, as well as American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program® (ACS NSQIP®) Champion for UPMC Presbyterian.
Amer has authored or co-authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications and over 20 book chapters/reviews focusing on outcomes after robotic and minimally invasive pancreas surgery. He is a member of the editorial boards of Journal of Surgical Oncology and Journal of Surgical Research and has served as the principal investigator on several clinical cancer trials. Dr. Zureikat is a member of numerous professional societies, including the Society of Surgical Oncology, Association of Academic Surgery, and the Americas Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association.
