Hometown
It is difficult for me to claim just one hometown. Davis County, Iowa, is where I attended high school, and is a town where I established great friendships. I have lived in nine different states throughout my life, due to my parents’ job opportunities and my time spent in the U.S. Army. I was born in Bowling Green Ohio, but have lived as far south as Jacksonville, FL.
Why I Chose the University of Pittsburgh
My interest in UPMC stemmed from the care they provided to my father in his final days. Before I entered medical school, my father was flown from a coastal southern state to UPMC for salvage surgery, his last chance to fight for his life. During that time, I lived in the Shadyside Family House for over a month, and every single person I encountered, from the housekeeping staff to the attending physicians, were professional, respectful, and very knowledgeable in their individual fields. I told myself that once I was in medical school, I would do a sub-intern surgery rotation at UPMC to view the institution from another perspective. As a sub-intern medical student, I was even more amazed by the great lengths that UPMC took to ensure that the faculty were up to date on the most current research and literature. I saw UPMC as a role model for my career; its values reflected the kind of surgeon I want to be.
Non-Academic Accomplishments
I was a medic and Licensed Practical Nurse on a Forward Surgical Team in the Army, which ultimately led to my decision to attend medical school.
