Residents are strongly encouraged to pursue research projects longitudinally throughout their 5 years. With full access to the world-class faculty from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, our program is unique among 5-year surgical residencies in the robustness of research opportunities afforded to residents. In 2019, the University of Pittsburgh was #4 in the US in NIH grant support, with $218 million in grants toward 472 awards. This strong research environment provides a unique opportunity for our residents to engage in basic, clinical, and translational pursuits with some of the leading minds in biomedical science.
