Three Department Faculty Members Receive UPMC Physician Excellence Awards
Congratulations to Melanie Scott, MD, PhD. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism of the National Institutes of Health recently awarded a new grant to Dr. Scott for the new project, “The Role of Matrix-Bound Microvesicles in Alcohol-Related Liver Disease".
Congratulations to Drs Matthew Neal, Philip Spinella, and Susan Shea who have received funding from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency for their research with synthetic blood.
A new sub-award for research to be conducted by Roberto Mota Alvidrez, MD, has been approved for funding.
Dr. Mota is the principal investigator (PI) on the project, “Role of Cytosolic Phospholipase A2 in vascular wall lipid accumulation in atherosclerosis” which will be funded by the University of California, San Diego Future Faculty of Cardiovascular Sciences (FOCUS) program.

Congratulations to the research team of Thiagarajan Meyyappan, MD; Steven Little, PhD; and Matthew Rosengart, MD, MPH who were awarded a $100,000 Pitt Innovation Challenge 2022 Award for their project "Micro-shield: Abdominal Adhesion Prevention".
Congratulations to Christine M. Leeper, MD, who was selected as one of the 40 under 40 female surgeons by the Association of Women Surgeons (AWS). Dr. Leeper is among honorees selected for being trailblazers in their field and making a significant impact and a reflection of their hard work and respect of their peers. She and the other awardees will be acknowledged at the AWS Annual Conference on October 15 and 17, 2022.
