NIH Awards Funding for a New Study with Dr. David Geller
A new sub-award for research to be conducted by David Geller, MD, will receive funding.
The NIH will fund a subaward for the project “Exosomal biomarkers for the early detection of hepatocellular carcinoma,” with PI Ajay Goel, Ph.D., AGAF from the Beckman Research Institute of the City of Hope.

Award Winners, 2023 Richard L. Simmons Lecture in Surgical Science/Department of Surgery Research Day
On April 19, 2023 we held our 21st Annual Research Day and Richard L. Simmons Lecture in Surgical Science. Attendees were treated to an outstanding presentation, "Leading the Way: Applying American Surgical Leadership Principles to Improve Health Care for All" by this years’ Richard L. Simmons lecturer, Dean Adil Haider from Aga Khan University Medical College .
UPMC Hillman “Rush to Crush Cancer” Fundraiser
UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, in partnership with P3R, announced their inaugural “Rush to Crush Cancer,” a new fundraising biking event to accelerate the pace of discovery and innovation in cancer research. The event’s goal is to bring people together to pedal, partner, and participate in raising vital funds to support cancer research and someday soon "crush" cancer.

Congratulations to Allan Tsung, MD, a former resident, hepatobiliary/pancreatic surgery fellow, and faculty member of our department, who has been appointed Chair of the Department of Surgery at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, effective June 27th.
Dr. Samer Tohme Awarded AHPBA Research Development Grant
Congratulations to Samer T. Tohme, MD, whose project “The Role of Neutrophil Extracellular Traps in Promoting the Progression of Liver Metastases after Surgical Stress” was awarded the 2022 Americas Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (AHPBA) Research Development Grant. Dr. Tohme will receive $30,000 in funding and the AHPBA will honor and recognize his winning research at the AHPBA Recognition Award Session of the 2022 International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association World Congress on Friday, April 1.
