Congratulations to the following faculty members who received important appointments during the first half of 2019:
Norman Wolmark, MD, a prominent surgeon and cancer researcher, will be joining the department as Professor of Surgery in the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. In addition, he will serve in a new position at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center as Director of National Cancer Institute Cooperative Group Clinical Trials. He will retain his role as Chairman of the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project and as contact principal investigator of NRG Oncology.
On May 8th, 2019, we held our 17th Annual Research Day and Richard L. Simmons Lecture in Surgical Science. Attendees enjoyed a phenomenal presentation from our guest lecturer, Dr. George Miller from the Department of Surgery at the New York University School of Medicine. His talk was entitled “New Approaches to Pancreatic Cancer Immunotherapy.”

The Wall Street Journal article “Can Breast Cancer Be Treated Without Surgery?” includes an interview with Emilia J. Diego, MD regarding a trial to possibly eliminate surgery for early breast cancer patients.
Congratulations to Emilia Diego, MD, who will join Adam Brufsky, MD as Co-Director of the UPMC Magee-Womens Breast Cancer Program, part of the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center. Dr. Diego brings her surgical expertise and leadership to the continued development of the clinical and academic mission for Breast Services.
Two of our most legendary faculty members, Bernard Fisher, MD and Thomas E. Starzl, MD, PhD, were honored as two of only five University of Pittsburgh faculty members featured in an interactive display on the 5th floor of Scaife Hall, the home of Pitt’s School of Medicine.
UPMC surgical oncologists Matthew Holtzman, MD and Jennifer Steiman, MD presented to an audience of over 70 physicians at the Monongahela Valley Hospital Oncology Symposium on June 27, 2018. Dr. Holtzman presented the lectures “Updates in Melanoma” and “Rectal Cancer Updates” and Dr. Steiman presented “New Trends in Breast Surgery.”
